I just got an email from this company called XinDesk who are developing a WebOS with a lot of Ajax, I was offered access to the demo account.
Black Beauty
Upon logging in I am met with an all black UI and a lush green landscape { I always liked lush green landscapes }. In terms of stuff happening, there really isn't much to see right now as it is obviously in beta. It is a free, one stop shop solution for making all your files, calendars, contacts and other data accessible and in sync wherever you are.
It’s pretty much like accessing your computer from any standard web browser, from a computer, a mobile phone or any other device connected to the Internet.
Open Platform
You can develop applications for it just like developers do for Bill a.k.a PC and Steve a.k.a Mac.
What can you do?
Well they say they have pretty much all the same functionality as a normal computer OS would like storing files, bookmarking sites in a web browser, why would anybody want to browse the web through a WebOS beats me, RSS support is also a feature they are touting.
I am little bit skeptical of the usability of a WebOS as I've never really tried it, but then I'm also excited at the prospect of being truly mobile with my work. With all the rumors of a Google OS that could be also web based I guess somebody must be interested.
Funding for the project is still not completely finalized, per their email.

I too am very skeptical of WebOS.. more from a data security side of things – but the whole concept is quite interesting and cool.
Not really an “OS” per say, it doesn’t communicate with the hardware. You still need an Operating System with a browser to access what would be more accurately described as an AJAX powered Desktop (actually that’s what the website says). Which still seems like a bad idea! JavaScript is not known to be exceptionally fast… and we already have 5 different Desktops to choose from (OS X, GNOME, KDE, Solaris, various flavours of Windows).
