Recently I see myself deleting a lot of ideas for lists that I've had for posts. It is not because the ideas themselves were bad or wouldn't generate interest from my present readers or get me new RSS subscribers. But simply because they've already been done to death and are available on virtually hundreds of websites.
For instance I was about half way through a gigantic list of iPhone only websites, but I realized while searching for them that a lot of people and their nanny had a list already. Not to mention the tens of "Top iPhone Apps", "Hottest iPhone Websites" and the sort littering the web. The Internet can do without my list, plus I really don't know how many of my readers actually own an iPhone, if any at all!
I decided against completing the post and just deleted it. Instead now I'm writing this one. So if you are thinking to make a gigantic list of "Everything on the Internet" think again. Do a search, if you don't find any resources like that then go ahead and build your list. But if you do find virtually tens to hundreds of similar resources chances are your post will not make much of an impact.
The golden rule for creating lists is to make sure that it has not been done before at all or in the recent past - and give it more substance than just a bunch of links.

Hi Ali. You left a nice comment on my Shoemoney guest post a while back and I wanted to say thanks.
I like your idea here with forgoing a gargantuan list every now and again. Many times a Google search is just more practical. Unless maybe it’s a review or you’re throwing something new into the mix.

hi i enjoyed the read
Another option to consider if you find other lists on the net would be to do a parody of that list. Everybody loves a good laugh!
