I was recently watching a series of videos by Andy Jenkins about how video is the underdog of the online marketing world and is ripe for the taking.

He’s not wrong.

If there’s one thing people don’t mind doing is hitting “Play” to watch a clip, or even a short movie. With the penetration that video has been seeing online it will only get more interesting and competitive. So if you want to get started making money with videos you better get started now.

But I’m BUTT ugly, I can’t go in front of a camera.

No, you’re not ugly and Yes, you can go in front of a camera. It’s not that hard, seriously.

What kind of video would I make?

I don’t know and frankly it does not matter right now. Sometimes not knowing is the best answer you can have. Don’t try and find a “category” right away, just start filming and take it as it goes along. Think of it as your first couple of months in college, or school if you’re not old enough, figure out what you want to do later. Heck, you can make videos about different features that WordPress Themes have!

Here are some videos to get you started. I sifted through a lot and picked this YouTube user at random. There are a lot more out there, if you care to look.

Making Money on YouTube – Lesson 1

Making Money on YouTube – Lesson 2

Making Money on YouTube – Lesson 3

Now, if you’ll excuse me I have some <del datetime="2010-02-24T10:24:37+00:00">money</del> videos to make. Let me know in the comments about your personal video channel, I would love to watch your videos!

The widget now uses the Sponsored Tweets API to supplement the functionality of the widget and gives users the ability to advertise their availability via the SponsoredTweets.com platform.

If you have a Sponsored Tweets account, the widget will automatically detect this and add a special section that shows visitors how much it will cost to “Sponsor a Tweet”. Clicking on the link takes a visitor directly to your Sponsored Tweets profile page enabling a visitor to sponsor one or more of your Tweets, as well as providing you a referral if the visitor is new to Sponsored Tweets.

I’ve been on the net for close to 8 years now. In this time I’ve set up a handful of my own websites, most of which have done business via affiliate marketing. Now, I’m not a “guru” {God that word needs to be replaced} but do have some light to shed on what you should and should NOT do when getting a domain for your affiliate business.

Before I begin the list I must say that the days of direct linking are getting over pretty soon. Sure it’s a great way to test the waters but it can also turn out to be very expensive. Setting up a moderately populated content site can have its benefits for a much longer time, plus organic traffic is free. Even if you outsource the writing it will be way cheaper than setting up a direct linking PPC campaign.

Here are the Top 10 Tips for Buying Affiliate Site Domains

Make sure it’s search term friendly – Let’s face it you are trying to make money with affiliate products, your best bet is to get a domain that would match a bunch of search terms. So ValentinesChocolates.com would probably be more effective as a site than ShopForValentineChocolates.com

Three Word Maximum – People don’t like to read on the internet, there’s just too much going on. While a two word domain is gold for affiliate marketers you can get away with a three word domain. It’s better to go for three short words, than long ones. ThanksgivingHolidayRecipes.com is bad, QuickTurkeyTips.com is better, plus it’s available

Will it Fit? – What I mean by that is will it fit in a regular Adwords/Yahoo PPC text ad. All of the search advertisers have a 35 character limit when it comes to URL displays. So think about that when you buy a domain as you may want to add extra words after the URl. For example QuickTurkeyTips.com/Cranberry is below 35 characters.

Use other TLD’s – You do not have to get a .com for an affiliate domain. There are dozens of TLD’s available and you can use them quite creatively.

Think about branding – At some point of time your site may get popular and you may want to expand it and give it more attention. So make sure that you get a domain that can be branded, this could virtually double or triple your income.

Use hypens with care – If you are thinking about building up a reputable affiliate business then try to get domains without hypens. Since most of the good domain names are taken, you can still buy them if owners will sell. Also see point no.4 above.

Buying registered domains/sites - You may frequently run into the fact that a lot of your domain ideas are already registered. If you are serious about building a long term strategy than you should consider buying an already registered domain/site from its owner.

Use Keyword Tools to get an idea of traffic – A great way to know whether a domain will get enough traffic to make you a sustainable income is to do some keyword research. KeyCompete.com is a great tool to help you do just that.

Long term strategy – In affiliate marketing there is a high probability that you will want to shift niches as fast as you can say ringtones. So sometimes it does help to get a domain name that you know you will use in the long run as a sustainable income source. It’s fine to get domains which will serve the “here and now” purpose, but it doesn’t hurt to look 3, 6 and 12 months down the line.

Think before searching – This has got to be the biggest mistake most new affiliate marketers will make. They keep on typing domain variation after variation into Go Daddy and expect to find something available. If they find something they buy it and then sit on it, doing absolutely nothing. How about you do some REAL thinking about what you want to build rather than just looking for a quick buck. Because if you look for a quick buck, that’s all you’ll make – a buck. I would recommend you do some old fashioned writing {y’know pen/pencil & paper} and figure out exactly what you would like to spend the next month of your life doing with a domain/site. But if you sit on a domain for a year and do nothing with it you’re just wasting your time, and other people’s time who would otherwise seriously want to develop that domain.

Think about all those tips long and hard, especially the last one. I’ve done my fair bit of domain squatting and have nothing to show for it.

If you would like more tips on getting the perfect domain for you I would recommend you buy Killer Domains – an ebook by Daniel from DailyBlogTips. I own the ebook and I must say it is spot on and provides a huge amount of information for only $17.00.

If there is one thing you need to do before getting into making money online, especially with a blog, is to automate the method of letting advertisers buy advertising from you.

The leading software on the market right now, for self hosted WordPress blogs, is OIO Publisher and I’ve finally gone ahead and automated all the advertising options I’ve wanted to add to this blog. The plugin seemed daunting at first with all the options available with it, so I just dove right in and played around. I’m glad I did.

I think I’ll go ahead and add this to all my blogs, even the ones that are currently in the works. If you haven’t bought OIO yet I suggest you do. The plugin is well worth every dollar you invest into it.

Do you have a success story of using this plugin? Has it helped you monetize your blog better than you have been able to do manually? If so then let me know by commenting and I’ll feature you here in a post later on.

Of course, if you want to let people battle for your advertising slots then WP Auctions does the trick perfectly

So there’s this site that presumably shows you how rich you’ll be. It asks a bunch of questions, starting with whether you’ve decided on, or are unclear, about your sex?!

Naturally, it’s all meant to be in good fun and if you really think the dollar will be worth anything in the next 10 years than you’re going to need much more than what this site defines as rich.

Affiliate marketing can be like trying to find the light switch in a dark room. You either fall and trip on something before you get to it, at which point of time you have a headache, or you know exactly where to look and then…there was light!

The main reason for that is you are promoting something from someone else and you have absolutely no idea what’s happening with the visitor you send towards an offer.

Why do some offers convert for others and not for you?

What’s the best page to send traffic to for direct linking?

The layout seems good to you, so why aren’t my visitors converting?

Is there too much fluff text to go through before the sign up form?

etc…

All the above are huge factors to consider, not one is less important than the other. You only know if something is working when you log in to see how much money you’ve spent and how much you’ve made back, or not! This is why taking the initiative to promote home grown offers can lead you to a better understanding of how a visitor reacts to different forms of interactive elements in a website or a sales page. Now I know for most people it is not feasible to go ahead and set up all this, especially if they don’t have the time to learn HTML, copywriting and all the other details that need to be taken care of. Most of all not everyone has a home grown offer to sell.

That is where my I come in. I’m going to start a series of posts throughout the month of May using one of my own products as a base to try and make my PPC campaigns work as effectively as possible and generate revenue. The same tips and methods can then be applied by you to do the same. Naturally with any other product of your choosing.

During the next month I’ll make various types of landing pages, PPC campaigns, keyword research and copywriting makeovers to see what works best and what doesn’t {for a product I already have}. This will help me perfect my skills in this genre, I’m still learning everyday, and with the added discussion from you hopefully all of us will be left a little more wiser as to how we fare on the web with affiliate marketing.

I’ve been talking about affiliate marketing for quite some time on this blog. I’m not anywhere near achieving what you will read on a lot of other blogs set up by affiliates. But I think I’ve finally cracked a few nuts.

I decided to set up a campaign and let it run in my account no matter what, win or loss. This is a crucial step, especially with Adwords. I didn’t let it go all crazy though as that would just be stupid. I targeted a very specific market in a highly competitive niche, I thought I would have to end up paying through my nose to get a click!

Lucky me, the minimum CPC was only $0.05 in this market, whereas in other markets around the world it was as high as $0.50! This is crazy! I thought. But then I realized the only reason it is so, is because the CTR rates are low as well. That may also be in part to the fact that I’m only bidding $0.10 for my campaigns. I’m not willing to pay more than that as the CPA for the offer I’m promoting is not that high, and as I already stated I’m doing this more to build up account history and to get some experience, while promoting highly competitive products.

This way when I go into a market, and a product, that is not highly competitive I’m fine tuned into making my campaigns the best they can be. Instead of testing them for weeks on end, I would probably just have to make a few changes to my campaigns and hopefully they should be profitable.

In the beginning of this campaign I tested out a few ad variations which had dismal results. I wrote the ads to look like they were personal stories, hoping to hit a chord. It didn’t work.

I then wrote them to be more friendly sounding, as I figured from looking at the competition in this niche they were writing all sorts of stuff in their ads which sounded well…lame. My first set of ads sounded lame too, a quick change later – voila a few conversions in the bag! The CTR was not bad either.

The thing I learned from writing ads for a PPC campaign is to ALWAYS respect the person who you want to click on your ads. For instance -

Don’t try and target someone searching for Organic produce with seeds from Monsanto {if you don’t know who they are, you should watch what you eat}, likewise

Don’t aim to show ads for Joel Comm’s Adsense Secrets to someone looking for how to make money online. That’s just wrong.

Don’t write ads full of hope and promise, your intentions will show through. They know you’re looking for them to sign up. Just ask nicely.

The person on the other end is a human too. If you care about them they’ll care about clicking on your ad, and will most probably convert.

Todd picked up the latest review auction I had, for BuySellAds. I’m actually glad he did, because his service aims to look after the medium to long tail of the web. Where, contrary to popular belief, there is still a lot of money and exposure to be made. Some would argue that cutting out the middleman in today’s world is so easy, especially with the wide range of tools available to monetize your site.

Well let me ask you this – If you don’t have a connection to a pool of advertisers, how exactly do you plan on monetizing your blog or website?

A lot of the bigger boys in blogging, general web sites too, tend to do a lot of their own advertising transactions. This probably means they hire someone full time to do so. I think 98% of bloggers don’t have that luxury. But a lot of the bigger boys also don’t cut out the middle man, in fact they frequently partner with them to make sure they always have their inventory full. {Naturally so, because they have payroll to make, which you have the luxury of not worrying about}

So while there are both sides to this argument, as everything in life, there is no reason that both cannot co-exist. Especially when it comes to the opportunity to make money, you should never look at one more option to do so as not being favorable.

BuySellAds is a favorable option for making more money with your web properties, Todd graciously provided me with an invite to sign up as a publisher {currently only advertisers can sign up}. It took me all of a few minutes to go through the process and install the code on my sidebar.

I can set my own price, they take a 25% cut, and the number of banners I want to sell per zone I set up. For instance, my sidebar zone sells site wide banner ads for $50 a month {which is $0.001 CPM, OMG!}. I’ve set the maximum width and height at 300 x 250, I can set the number of ads I want to rotate in that zone and the maximum amount of ads I’m selling for that zone, which is 2.

I think those are some pretty nice features to have, especially since I can sell more inventory per zone. I’m assuming the ads will rotate evenly? I would make a suggestion here though to Todd, and that is to have a preset range of standard banner sizes for publishers to choose from.

Some other features for publishers include -

You want the benefits of selling ads through a marketplace but don’t want to pay high commissions (their rate is 25%)

Automation – from accepting payments to putting ads live and then taking them down, the entire process is automated

They sell your ads as subscriptions and they renew at a higher rate month-to-month

You can cash out whenever you want, it’s your money

Overall I think they are doing a good job of giving bloggers and website owners more options to monetize their sites. Adbrite has a similar system, but there your price fluctuates on various other factors that most of the time don’t make sense. BuySellAds does show stats from Alexa, Compete, PageRank, Delicious Bookmarks, Technorati rank and Yahoo Backlinks, which are updated once a month. Though they do not play a factor in deciding your ad rate.

Advertisers too, I’m sure, will find a benefit in this system. You are free to look at the sites before you buy and know exactly where you will be placed, size of the ad, rotation if any, etc…Many sites in the system have a low rate presently, including mine, so you’ll be better off getting in early and grab the good spots before they’re all gone.

Sign up here for BuySellAds.

Gaining a passive source of income is probably the best thing you can utilize the internet for, apart from all the content out there. Mind you, there is work involved in the beginning to get things flowing. But once you’ve laid the foundation, the only way is UP.

I’ve been working on optimizing a certain ad network, in the beginning it had a few hiccups as the daily intake would just never budge over a couple of cents. Even though the ad serving was laser targeted and I had good enough traffic to monetize. The darn thing just never went over a certain point.

I made a few small changes and that’s when I started consistently hitting $1 a day {small steps people, small steps…}, which got me excited as I saw there was potential. I then went on an optimization binge and tried to optimize the ads for each and every single visitor I got on my sites. Mixing it with a few other ad networks to increase profitability per visitor.

Mixing ads has advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages being -

You can split test between two networks

More choices to click, i.e they can click on more than one ad just to see if they find something interesting. Which means more money for you, as your income is based on clicks.

The content page looks dynamic to a repeat visitor

You can see if one networks ad format beats the other, under various scenarios.

The disadvantages being -

If you don’t blend the ads well enough, you lose the click out. Hence you make no money.

Sometimes both ad networks perform equally, leaving you in a dilemma as to which to preferably use. Which means you end up spending way too much time testing.

An ad unit can have a high CTR but a low eCPC, which may not be the case with the other ad networks unit {i.e low CTR but high eCPC}. Sometimes this may cause you to abandon research behind scaling your project altogether.

Naturally, results will vary by day, weekend and world social events. Taking those into consideration, I am happy to say that I’m no longer excited about the $1 a day I was making. I’m actually looking at doubling the present $2 – $3 p/d I make within the next two weeks. Which has me even more excited.

Once I’ve optimized my ad units, and find the right balance, I can set and forget about optimizing this particular income stream for at least the next 6 months.

That doesn’t mean I won’t expand it, it just means I won’t be doing anymore testing to see what works and what doesn’t. That’s the real joy of passive income, to know the dough is rolling even in your sleep.

Making a quick buck on the web is so simple that the next door teenager can do it. But the question is will you do it? I always maintain that making money online is not easy in contrast to what others say to you about it. It takes attitude to make money online.

Here I give you 8 steps to kickstart a niche blog and make money off of it.

Go to Blogspot {if you feel entrepreneurial register a domain} and create a new blog about a niche you know something or anything about. You do not have to be passionate about the niche, just knowing a bit about it can go a far way on the net. Don’t try to scam people, so be wise when getting into it.

Choose a decent template, put your Adsense code in and you could potentially start earning from Day 1. This works best for niche sites over flagship blogs.

Concentrate 60 minutes a day on the blog, write at least 2 “good posts”. Note the quotes.

After you do this for a week, you have 12-14 “good posts”. Note the quotes again. Now spend time on social media sites and submitting your content to them, if you want faster results, get seed votes from sites like Stumblecult or Piqqus.com.

Visit DigitalPoint forums section for directory announcements and submit to 2 directories a day. A job of say, 5 minutes a day? Clue: Slow backlinks to your site can avoid a sandbox/penalty death to your blog.

While at DigitalPoint or some other forums, do yourself a favor and participate in the threads there. Clue: Will help in increasing your reputation and hence more buyers when you decide to sell your blog.

Now you should have some traffic from referrals, organic and direct sources to make you money on Adsense or some other affiliate programs. Invest what you make from your blog in the first 6 months back into the blog.

Subscribe to Hyder’s feeds so that, I TheAnand can make myself heard to you guys through some random guest posts.

So, there you have it <strike>eight,</strike> seven honest steps to make money blogging online for free, starting from scratch. Some people, in fact a lot of people, do this every day for a living. They make a pretty good living too. Naturally there’s more to it, but in a nutshell the above process can be repeated over and over again, depending on the amount of energy and creativity you have.

Some might say that the above steps are downright full of scam, for that – read point 1 again. Remember, that this is a step by step process where you could potentially find a gold mine niche and could literally make a lot of money overnight. It happens everyday to people all over the net, you just never hear about them because you’re too busy clicking on their ads .

I’ve been running this certain CPC networks ads on a few of my sites and I was always fumbled by how it seemed to perform so well a few days in the beginning and totally died the rest. The traffic was not a problem as it was consistent, it was something just so insanely simple I didn’t figure it out till I clicked on the ads myself.

Which by the way is not always advisable, but in this case I simply had no choice.

The ads allowed me to customize the widget quite extensively. I did some testing on it to make sure that they flawlessly blended in with the content but yet looked obtrusive enough to click. I learned the hard way that sometimes too many customization options can end up hurting you.

Customizing the basic things like colors, borders, text size, text color, hover color etc…was all fine. But when it comes to the part where the “target=” attribute gets involved that’s when things can get tricky if you do not know how the ad server handles it.

The ads allowed you to specify how the browser could react to a click on the ad. The usual suspects were _top, _blank, _self and _parent. I set it on _self so that the ads would open in the same window and the user would not be upset about having to deal with another new tab or window opening up.

That’s when earnings tanked.

You see the _self action for the target attribute let the ad open up in the same window, as it should. The only thing was that it showed the ad within the constraints of the ad banner.

So if I had a 728 x 90 ad with four different ads showing. When an ad was clicked the resulting site would open within the 728 x 90 space itself, not the whole web page. So basically it was like showing a site within the 728 space except without any scroll bars or any other way for the user to click back. The reasons why the earning tanked was because sometimes there were two clicks necessary to get paid. Which sucked.

Ever since I saw that small, but fatal, error on my part I promptly adjusted my ads. They are now set to open up in _top which lets the ad show up in the same browser window, as was originally my intention.

To answer my question: To _self Or Not To _self.

NOT!

While browsing Amazon I stumbled upon something that truly caught my eye. ProBlogger Darren Rowse along with Chris Garrett are going to release a book on ProBlogging itself.

You can start pre-ordering it today. The book should ship in June. Look out for one of his exclusive interviews about the book on this blog.

I imagine this book is going to be very popular when it starts shipping. You can also bet that the book will be chock full of information that Darren probably doesn’t give out on his blog {everyone has secrets} along with Chris’s input as well. Long time readers of ProBlogger will probably want to add this to their collection of books.

Carrying on from my last post on growing pains of affiliate marketing, here’s a few more things I learned.

Don’t spend too much time on just optimizing your campaigns. You need to also optimize your landing pages. With the around 15 – 30 seconds that you have before a visitor jumps you need to make sure they see what you want them to see. So that your conversions could possibly hit the roof.

Make it easy to manage your campaigns by using Adwords Editor, or another paid PPC manager. I’ve just downloaded Adwords Editor, I’m going to spend a few days getting to know each and every single aspect of it before I use it to manage my campaigns.

Don’t just rely on PPC for traffic, unless all you’re doing is sending traffic straight to the source. I like to use content as well to drive traffic from search engines on specialty built sites. There’s nothing like free traffic. Of course this takes time, but nobody said making money online was easy. If someone does tell you that, you should stop listening to them immediately as they will probably try to sell you an overpriced ebook that has nothing of value in it.

Keep your morale up. There’s nothing worse than seeing that you have spent $X amount and not gotten anything back in return. Trust me if it won’t be today it will be tomorrow. Just make sure you learn in the beginning. It’s not an overnight thing.

Affiliate marketing can be really beneficial to your lifestyle once you get the hang of it. I now know why some people charge hundreds to thousands of dollars for information connected with affiliate marketing. Because they have put so much effort, time and money into getting to the position they are in. Of course, some of them are the shady kind. Those judgments need to be made on a case by case basis.

I’ll leave you now with a video from Jeremy. He’ll tell you the one single reason which will differentiate you from the rest of the crowd.
