It's 2009 and if you have less than 5 web profiles you're not a proper web citizen. At last count, I had somewhere north of a dozen, which can get overwhelming as a signature in your email or pretty lengthty in your "about" page.
There are many aggregators out there that let you log into your profiles from one central location. Though, I would not trust my login information with any such service, some people do find it useful. SmartProfile is one such new service, but rather than ask you for your login information it just asks for your profile usernames.
The sign up is pretty straight forward and you specify the profiles you have at the time of sign up. As of now the site only supports 8 social websites, you can request them to add more. The one thing that I think will hinder the wide adoption of SmartProfile is that they "reserve full rights to place any kinds of advertising on your SmartProfile page". This might be OK for a LinkedIn, MySpace or Facebook but if you're just starting out I would suggest you lay off the the CPC ads and work on getting a user base first.
In 2009, user base is everything.
The main features of SmarProfile are -
- A universal URL for all your profiles. Several choices from .Com, .Org, .Me, .Name, .Info, .Us...
- Bring all your profiles to your blog or website through their widget.
I think the service has it's uses, could use some design and usability enhancements, I don't think it will hurt to reserve your username just in case
