MillionDollarWiki – Buy Your Own Wiki Page

*Sponsored Presentation*

Remember that kid in the U.K that said he wanted to raise some money to pay for his college tuition by selling pixels. Well he got his wish, but the effect of it lingered on the internet and after many attempts {some successful some not} pixel advertising died a slow death. But now it's the turn of the Wiki!

Something similar was launched recently, Mahalo, where the website paid "Guides" to power their human search engine. It's successful so far. Which is why I think probably the Million Dollar Wiki might find some success for itself as well.

It is started by Graham Langdon, a student from Conneticut, who started it to pay off his college debt to realize his dreams. You can buy your own page which can titled with it's own phrase or keyword. So if you wanted to get something called Web Hosting, you'd have to pay the $100 price for it and wait for someone to activate an account for you. I have a feeling it would work better if somehow the whole system would work without human intervention, but oh well. Once activated you can create your page as you please.

Visit the site to see which are the most popular pages, each page has some description about the topic - like this one for Entrepreneur. Of course the person who bought the page would then link to their own website, or promote their own service. A good way to build link backs, and increase sales perhaps. Since the pages are filled with relevant information it might be a good method for SEO.

So far the site has sold 126 pages, at time of writing. Plus you can resell your page once you've gotten the benefit you wanted for it. If it becomes successful the resell value could be quite substantial.

    Hey guys,

    This is shameless promotion:

We just launched http://FiveDollarWiki.com where you can buy links for 5 bucks!

The only difference is money here, the content would be about the same.

    This is top secret:

On the sidenote, we are working on our Top Secret, http://OneBuckWiki.com which we will launch in few days but don’t tell anyone yet. Shhhh….

We are also looking for couple people to build content. Basically we will hook you up with free pages and you have to put some good content right away.

You can email me at max [at] fivedollarwiki.com

Um, I think these formulas are bound to lead to nothing more that failure. If you’re going to do it right you have to go the open source way. It’s no suprise that everyone is favouring sites like Wikipedia over Encarta or Brittanica. And the same has to be sade about the MillionDollarWiki…. there needs to be a free/flexible pricing alternative and the best I’ve found is FameWord.com
