Quality should never be compromised for quantity. You should always strive to deliver quality content in all your posts even if you are just writing a rambling, a rant, or a joke. Giving everything you write a good amount of thought which will in effect provide a level to hold yourself up to.
Once you get to where you cannot yourself bear to read a boring or a ill conceived post from then on everything you write will get a subconscious of its own. You will write quality content even when you don't mean to. A measure of your success would be when you are able to get comments, or linked back, for a post where you wrote about how there wasn't enough salt in the chicken you ate at the restaurant last night.
Thought process
Giving a reader something to think about, laugh or form a discussion around. If you keep your posts insightful, lively and debatable then you will attract the sort of individuals who would want to do so with you.
Take this blog for example simply by writing consistent and urbane posts I've managed to see my feed subscribers rise, my traffic virtually triple itself, my income from this blog has gone from $0 to above the midway point of $1K, and well now there is just no stopping. I've still to do quite a many few things on this blog and my network in general. The coolest thing is I've been only doing this for less than a year.
Ripple effect
Now writing can be a commonplace act for some folk, but sadly the last 30 blogs that just got set up while you read this post will probably not make any significant contribution to the blogosphere. I look at the internet as an ecosystem by itself much like our daily lives. What one person does could practically affect tens if not millions of people. The ripple effect of one event has the potential to spread itself across countries and boundaries in the blink of an eye through the internet.
The opportunity for everybody to start their own ripple effect is there and for the taking. Those who are smart enough to figure it out by their drive for knowledge will come upon it and send the wave back.
With blogging you have the chance to make as many ripples as you like, in fact you could be the sole source of them. Just look at how many blogs and sites are out there that write content and the minute it's published people are scrambling to bookmark them, email them, IM it to friends, link back to it from their own blogs and more. Why? Purely because of their quality and consistency and nothing else.
The trick is, How can you become that source for the next internet wave, the next ripple effect?
Consistency is learnt, not taught
In the effort for you to be consistent with yourself you need to be proactive in considering the approach you wish to establish with your ultimate goals. For if you cannot center yourself around a certain point of view all actions that you take to maximize yourself, and remain on track, will be wasted.
There is no school where you can learn how to keep somebody interested for life with something that you do. Blogging is similar - nobody can teach you how to be a good blogger you just need to get your hands dirty and find out how good you can make yourself and how far off you can carry it. Nothing lasts forever but you can still make an impact if you want.
Everyone has the potential, just not everyone possesses the consistency.

Great post. I agree, just too many people are starting blogs for the heck of it and not interesting in ‘writing’, which really is the essence of a good blog.
