Here we are almost at the end of 2008 so I thought I might give my ‘ol blog a little makeover. I took this very awesome WordPress theme and did a little bit of tinkering around and voila! I now have a new look. Took me all of a few hours to get things styled the way I wanted them.

Branding is important!

LogoCreator is a logo creation program that helps anyone with a mouse and a keyboard create their own Logo Design, so you can brand yourself. They’ve sponsored this review, so here goes.

They were kind enough to provide a review version. The program weighs in at around 50 MB zipped up and after installation takes up 123 MB on your system. Pretty hefty for a logo creation software. Anyhow, setup took less than a minute and went smoothly.

It comes pre-installed with a whole array of logo templates which are fully editable by you. You can change the colors, the positions, rotate elements, add all kinds of effects, choose fonts from your system or use their own in built ones and many more options.

The only thing that put me off right away is that I couldn’t upload any of my own images. Then again if that were to be the case they have to add some sort of image editing capabilities in there, which is clearly not what this software is for. It’s aimed at letting you use some basic templates, make the necessary adjustments and pop a logo out.

I’m not sure if a professional would be caught using this, but the features that come with it can help a do-it-yourself type of person generate a logo for themselves at a fraction of the cost.

They also sell logo template packs on their site, my review version came with the “Entertainment Pack”, you’ll find a logo I quickly whipped up for this review below.

So, do I think it’s worth it for someone willing to put in their own time and generate logos for a fraction of the cost? At $29.95, Yes. But know that you will have to spend some time learning the ins and outs of the program before you are able to churn out something which can hold itself and your brand.

After all, you want a logo that you want to be able to use for a long time to come, just don’t expect to have it in 5 minutes.

I’ve been going around a lot of blogs lately and it’s great to see that an overwhelming amount of the better ones are using WordPress to power their content. Which is great, since I design themes for it.

As ridiculous as that price point sounds to me, being a blog designer and all, I can’t help but marvel at the ingenuity of Small Potato a.k.a WP Designer.

I think there is value in joining WP Designer’s Theme Club simply because it’s ridiculously cheap. Plus if you’re a designer you could use the themes as a base for building client websites. There is no copyright on any of the themes {I like to build my own frameworks – keeps my creative juices fresh }. He plans on releasing 12 themes a year.

You’re probably thinking why I’m talking about his theme club when he is in direct competition to me. It’s quite simple actually, because he is not competing with my market. My market consists of bloggers looking to be completely distinct. I’m sure they know that even if they did join the club and put down $5 they will still be sharing the same theme with each and every single member. To get it customized would probably cost them another $599 {my price for a makeover}. Most designers don’t even do makeovers. So you’ll probably end up paying at least $1 k for a unique wordpress theme.

If there is one thing the developers in Dubai are good at, it is outdoing each other. This one definitely takes the cake, and in my opinion probably outdoes the Burj Al Arab as well {OK, maybe not}.

Nakheel, a Dubai based real estate developer, just announced their latest project today which is set to change the Dubai skyline. Called the Dubai Promenade the main attraction is going to be a wheel shaped hotel. Pictures of the plan below, which I snapped from the newspaper advertisement today. {click for bigger views}

I’m going into extra development mode for my blog design company. Even though there is a lot of competition out there, with more springing up everyday, there is room for everyone. It doesn’t matter where you live, it all depends on how much you get your name out there.

Marketing Your Designs – One Of The Toughest Jobs On The Planet

If there is one thing you should know before you enter into the web design arena is that it is one of the toughest places to be online. A lot of web users don’t even think twice about a site’s design when they browse, it only comes into play when choices about spending money come into play. That’s where a site designer’s real test is – Can he make the difference between a sale and a bounce?

I’ve gone through many experiences where I’ve literally screamed at the screen over IM conversations with clients, because they just don’t get the usability part for websites. Blog design is pretty much the same. If your blog is not friendly enough to make a reader comment, provide subscription options at first glance, have ample “over the fold” ad space then chances are not much commenting, subscribing or advertising is going to happen.

If you, as a designer, cannot accomplish that for your client than chances are they won’t bother coming back to you or recommending you to anyone.

The Next Level

I’ve been working on my premium theme and thinking of the best way to make sure that the basic needs of a new blogger is met. Seasoned bloggers might like it too, due to the ease of customization I’m going to offer for it. I still haven’t settled on a name yet.

The best part is I have not opened photoshop at all to put the theme into concept, I didn’t even draw it out on paper! I just created index.php, style.css and went from there. It’s amazing what flows when you see a clean white screen and fill it up with XHTML/CSS goodness.

This theme will not only offer bloggers a unique theme, but also give me the chance to spend more time on actual design rather than split it between design and coding. Taking my blog design company to the next level.
