CodeScreen – Evaluating Software Developers

Randy Sasaki is the founder of CodeScreen and he recently emailed me letting me know of his new service of the same name.

CodeScreen was developed to fill the void for a better way of testing programmers instead of the phone screening, interviewing and then testing. Instead now you can just point them towards codescreen let them take a test and watch step-by-step how they performed on their test on a patent pending technology that the site uses.

Randy Sasaki, "At CodeScreen, we have two goals: first, we help companies make good hiring decisions and second, we maximize hiring resources for companies by allowing them to focus on the best candidates."

Unlike other testing sites which present only multiple choice questions, CodeScreen presents candidates with a series of problems and runs the candidates' submissions against a battery of tests.

CodeScreen administers Java, C++, C, SQL and J2EE tests to candidates who need nothing more than a web browser to submit responses. C#, Perl, PHP and ASP support are planned for CodeScreen's next release. Companies can select from CodeScreen's library of tests or they can create custom tests to meet their specific needs.

With the thousands of software developers jobs being made open every year a service like this could seriously help in streamlining the hiring process. See a demo test here.

I also had the chance to ask him a few questions about the service -

  • Is the patent pending technology owned by your company?
Yes, the patent pending technology and everything on the site is owned by CodeScreen.

  • Have you thought of offering a free basic test that any programmer can take, and maybe a job board?
    Yes and no.
Yes: In the future, we plan on offering more services geared towards candidates, including practice tests and certifications.

No: Having our own job board isn't planned.

  • Do you think in the future codescreen would offer its users a testing ground for trying out their scripts rather than just taking tests?
That's a great idea! {You're Welcome} Turning CodeScreen into a community service, rather than just a hiring tool could really benefit a lot of programmers.  It's a definite possibility.

CodeScreen was founded in 2006. Prior to founding CodeScreen, Sasaki spent 11 years as a Software Engineer and Director in the Video Game, Internet, and Space and Defense industries.
