You know doing freelance work for years I've come across many clients who have absolutely no clue what they want, many who think they know what they want and then those precious few little angels who will nod to everything you say, sigh...Well it's time to take matters into my own hands. I am working on a new personal project and I thought I might document each step I go through, prior to launch.
So far this is what has happened.
The idea:
Well, I can't give away the idea yet as it is still in development. The best part about the idea is that it will appeal to a very wide and constantly growing community. Which means that it is capable of marketing itself. After the initial launch and release it will hopefully grow virally, with minimal, to no effort required on my part for marketing.
You know how Coca-Cola has made themselves synonymous with refreshments and cold drinks, that's what I'm hoping for this product to become in comparison. The nature of my idea is such that competition will probably be not a problem as the community behind it is not competitive, well most of it at least. In fact the community is there to assist in the development and growth of it. So it's a winning situation.
How can you come up with similar ideas?
You know those times while you are lying down in bed and some idea sparks in your head. The trouble with them is they are just that - sparks. If you don't ignite it, it won't fire up. How many times have you said to yourself - "Wow! That's an amazing idea!" But never follow it up. This was one of those sparks, instead of just letting it extinguish away I decided to light it up.
While I was sending emails to developers I was making notes of how I want to make this work and function. Now that I have someone helping me in developing it I can go on to the next step.
The domain:
A domain name for your idea, business plan, etc...can be quite a hassle to come up with sometimes. But this time it was quite simple, plus it was available. You will soon know what it is.
The best part is that idea and the domain relate to each other, meaning you will know exactly what the product is once you hear the domain. I was thinking of getting a "Web 2.0" type name but finally decided against it, as the people that will probably use the product need to be able to pronounce it, relate to it and remember it. I can't remember half the web 2.0 sites I've reviewed on this blog.
I think I got the best domain possible for this product, I still can't believe it was available. Which makes me even more excited as it is a niche that no one has yet stepped into! Yippee!
The Design:
As I write this post I am also doing the design for the layout. Presently I'm experimenting with color by using colour lovers and the wonderful palettes created by their users.
I will post more on the design process once I get past the home page. It's looking bright so far, I think I need to tone it down a bit. I want the work at home momma's using this product too.
