I’ve been on the net for close to 8 years now. In this time I’ve set up a handful of my own websites, most of which have done business via affiliate marketing. Now, I’m not a “guru” {God that word needs to be replaced} but do have some light to shed on what you should and should NOT do when getting a domain for your affiliate business.

Before I begin the list I must say that the days of direct linking are getting over pretty soon. Sure it’s a great way to test the waters but it can also turn out to be very expensive. Setting up a moderately populated content site can have its benefits for a much longer time, plus organic traffic is free. Even if you outsource the writing it will be way cheaper than setting up a direct linking PPC campaign.

Here are the Top 10 Tips for Buying Affiliate Site Domains

Make sure it’s search term friendly - Let’s face it you are trying to make money with affiliate products, your best bet is to get a domain that would match a bunch of search terms. So ValentinesChocolates.com would probably be more effective as a site than ShopForValentineChocolates.com

Three Word Maximum - People don’t like to read on the internet, there’s just too much going on. While a two word domain is gold for affiliate marketers you can get away with a three word domain. It’s better to go for three short words, than long ones. ThanksgivingHolidayRecipes.com is bad, QuickTurkeyTips.com is better, plus it’s available

Will it Fit? - What I mean by that is will it fit in a regular Adwords/Yahoo PPC text ad. All of the search advertisers have a 35 character limit when it comes to URL displays. So think about that when you buy a domain as you may want to add extra words after the URl. For example QuickTurkeyTips.com/Cranberry is below 35 characters.

Use other TLD’s - You do not have to get a .com for an affiliate domain. There are dozens of TLD’s available and you can use them quite creatively.

Think about branding - At some point of time your site may get popular and you may want to expand it and give it more attention. So make sure that you get a domain that can be branded, this could virtually double or triple your income.

Use hypens with care - If you are thinking about building up a reputable affiliate business then try to get domains without hypens. Since most of the good domain names are taken, you can still buy them if owners will sell. Also see point no.4 above.

Buying registered domains/sites - You may frequently run into the fact that a lot of your domain ideas are already registered. If you are serious about building a long term strategy than you should consider buying an already registered domain/site from its owner.

Use Keyword Tools to get an idea of traffic - A great way to know whether a domain will get enough traffic to make you a sustainable income is to do some keyword research. KeyCompete.com is a great tool to help you do just that.

Long term strategy - In affiliate marketing there is a high probability that you will want to shift niches as fast as you can say ringtones. So sometimes it does help to get a domain name that you know you will use in the long run as a sustainable income source. It’s fine to get domains which will serve the “here and now” purpose, but it doesn’t hurt to look 3, 6 and 12 months down the line.

Think before searching - This has got to be the biggest mistake most new affiliate marketers will make. They keep on typing domain variation after variation into Go Daddy and expect to find something available. If they find something they buy it and then sit on it, doing absolutely nothing. How about you do some REAL thinking about what you want to build rather than just looking for a quick buck. Because if you look for a quick buck, that’s all you’ll make - a buck. I would recommend you do some old fashioned writing {y’know pen/pencil & paper} and figure out exactly what you would like to spend the next month of your life doing with a domain/site. But if you sit on a domain for a year and do nothing with it you’re just wasting your time, and other people’s time who would otherwise seriously want to develop that domain.

Think about all those tips long and hard, especially the last one. I’ve done my fair bit of domain squatting and have nothing to show for it.

If you would like more tips on getting the perfect domain for you I would recommend you buy Killer Domains - an ebook by Daniel from DailyBlogTips. I own the ebook and I must say it is spot on and provides a huge amount of information for only $17.00.

Find Savings on Products From Other Consumers – DealShouter.com

DealShouter.com is a social bargain hunting service that will let consumers post various deals they have found as well as bargains, coupon codes, rebates, and other special offers that can result in saving consumers money. The advantage of DealShouter.com is that the deals that are offered by other consumers and posted on the site are unbiased, as the information comes straight from the consumer and not the manufacturer. By doing this, consumers can read about products that other consumers have found and have saved money on.

The consumers can look at posted deals that are newly popular, the top deals of the day, the top deals of the day before, and deals from both weeks and months ago. Every deal that is posted also has a special link where they can “Tell a Friend” by sending the link to that deal to up to three e-mail addresses.

The community of DealShouter users can then vote to decide what the best deals are. Therefore deals that are classified “popular” are ones that many people have saved money on. There are also Special Offers straight from manufacturers that can also save consumers money.

Some categories that consumers have included great deals on include: Appliances, Audio/Video/DVD, Automotive, Babies/Kids, Books & Magazines, Clothing & Apparel, Computers & Software, Electronics, Monitors/TV, Media/Storage, Phones/Communications, Food & Drink, Furniture, Home & Garden, Health & Beauty, Jewelry & Watches, Sports Equipment & Outdoor Gear, Toys & Games & Travel & Leisure. The possibilities to find great deals, coming directly from unbiased consumers, by using DealShouter.com are endless. DealShouter.com allows people to both find savings they have found and look over savings that others have found.

Being a fledging online entrepreneur has it’s drawbacks. I keep thinking of new things to do as the entry barrier is virtually nothing for me - design, marketing, content etc…are all things that I’ve spent individually time on online. So I find myself starting a new project every couple of months.

I couldn’t even do half the things I do today if I had a normal 9-5 job, then again I would probably have more capital to invest in my “startups”. But I’m not that upset about it. I frankly couldn’t see myself going to work for someone else. Unless the internet itself imploded, which is well - highly unlikely.

So as I embark on yet another project this week I look back and see how much I’ve accomplished over the last 3 - 4 years I’ve been online. I haven’t been able to crack the ‘Top 100′ list anywhere, as well that was never the objective while starting anything. The objective has always been, and will continue to be, to build something that is sustainable, have continuation scope and able to manipulated to serve a different purpose.

For instance, after launching WP Auctions I’ve seen it used by people to run charity auctions and even a full auction site type set up. For me it is a success, and I think I’ve only spent like $50 in marketing expenses to make a small, yet steady, income channel. We are now moving onto the next phase for WP Auctions and I see it’s future quite bright.

As I see my whiteboard and look at the deadlines I’ve placed on myself I have found that the mechanism of development moves at a completely different level. I highly suggest you get yourself one, even if you are a new blogger.

Here’s one more tip if you are embarking on a new journey yourself, don’t pack too much. You can always get shampoo where you’re going. If you know what I mean.

It’s one of those days again when you sit back, relax and have a good time. You take the family out, get some home shopping done, pay for it and head back home. As you drink your cup of tea you start to think about things. Business, life, location, past, present and the future come rushing towards you at once demanding attention. It’s hard to ignore the fact that everything I just mentioned in the previous sentence involves money at all stages.

What a revolting reality.

Why do we as a civilization see money as being an absolute part of life? It’s polluted our senses to such an extent where most people see it as being a necessity for existence, a barometer of one’s worth, separating populations based on printed denominations and an instrument that can bring much desperation to a mechanized human mind - a.ka. getting fired.

Most of the worlds population spends money because they are told to. Be it your newspaper, the ad on your coffee cup, billboards, your lunch receipt, virtually every page on the internet and every other 5th minute on the radio and every 12th - 15th minute on your TV. The very nature of money in your mind is to spend it.

How about if we changed our mindset and used it. Sure there are a few necessities that you can’t help but pay like rent, utilities etc… but what if you cut everything else off unnecessary. I’m not going to tell you what you should cut off, and keep, as everyone has their own necessities in life.

What did I cut off?

Being an internet junkie I have my fair share of online expenses. The most of which are hosting fees. Many of my sites are hosted on shared servers at various providers. I decided to get myself a dedicated virtual server. That one move alone will save me around $300 a year.

How did I use it?

I took that money and used it to pay for an e-learning course and some online tools that I’ve just begun using, which will help me make more money. So instead of spending it on the latest iPod {I’ve yet to own one} I invested in myself.

Because at the end of the day my knowledge will keep me afloat no matter what situation arises in the future. Not a gadget. That’s one example of using money, in lieu of just spending it. I’m sure once you really get into it you can come up with some better ideas at using money.

The end lesson is here that you need to start seeing money as a tool. The better you get at using this tool the more you can do with it. It’s not a necessity for survival.

“Only when the last tree has withered, the last fish has been caught, and the last river’s been poisoned, will man realize we cannot eat money.” - citizens wisdom by BehindDarkEyes.

I blog, you read, you think hmm…that’s interesting? You leave a comment and then go on with your life.

I blog, you read, you get inspired! You then leave a comment and you write a post talking about what I blogged about, send me a trackback and then you get on with your life.

I blog, you read, you think DAMN! Why didn’t I think about that before. You leave a comment, you write a post about it on your blog, you come back to discuss with others who are also commenting and then you get on with your life.

I blog, you read, you get completely blown over. You comment, send a trackback post, engage in the discussion, submit to social bookmarking sites and then get on with your life.

I blog, you read, a tear slides down your cheek. After commenting, re-blogging, engaging, socializing the post you also engage in the discussion on the social sites. You even post it to twitter and then you get on with your life.

I blog, you read, a moment of revelation passes over you. Commenting and spreading the word around is not enough for you, you actually become my most passionate reader and comment on all of my past posts {all 1000 of them}. At this point of time I am part of your life.

I blog, you read, your first born gets named after me. OK, now it’s getting weird, you really should get on with your life.

I blog, you get offended, you call me all sorts of names on a forum where you are known for this sort of behavior. You have no life.

I blog, you read, you add me to your IM list. I wish you would get on with your life.

I blog, you print and file my posts. You ask for my number…I say, I have a life.

I blog, you send me a marriage proposal. I’m already taken.

I blog, you read, you subscribe.

I like the last one the best

Did you do nothing today? Did you do nothing yesterday? Brilliant!

Sometimes I do nothing as well and use my time to the fullest for it. Now when I mean “nothing” it usually means that I’m not “working” - in the real literal meaning of it. So that would mean I was either reading something, learning something or spending quality time with family. That’s my definition of nothing.

Doing nothing is nothing to be ashamed of, in fact I would say it is downright necessary. Only from doing nothing do we gather the energy, inspiration and drive to do “something“. Just make sure that when you are doing nothing you really are doing NOTHING. Trying to think up a project in the middle of a family outing is doing something and that gets in the way of your “nothing time”.

This is a nice blue image of nothing…

My nothing time is usually filled with a lot of stuff that gives me the relaxation I need to be more productive in my “something” time. It may be slightly confusing for some to understand this. But for those who run their own shift, are their own boss and walk their walk will know exactly what I’m talking about.

Getting away from it all and doing nothing is probably the only way that something will ever get accomplished.

You get it?

It always takes a lot longer than anticipated, you will probably fall sick, lose weight, get cramps {which part depends on what you are creating} and you will almost always want to stop right before the going gets good.

That’s it in a nutshell.

But there is more to it than what’s above, there is also the fact that you will almost never be able to do it by yourself. Steve Jobs probably said it best, “Surround yourself with smart, passionate people”.

There is also the fact that finding smart, passionate people is very hard to do. In fact it’s harder than setting up a company itself. When I started Weborithm there was just me, myself and I. We worked well together and the work load was sufficient so we carried along. Then we started to get these brilliant ideas that somehow were just bigger than our skillset. So we started looking around, luckily we happened to run into one very talented and extremely friendly guy called Owen and the rest as they say is history.

Well, we haven’t made history yet - but we’re getting there.

Creating something by yourself is fun, but creating it with someone else is even better.

There is actually three other people involved with me {my wife and two kids} that have helped tremendously as well so I’ve never been alone during any of my adventures, and mis-adventures.

So if you ever set out to create or start something new make sure to find at least one person whom you can rely on and ask for assistance, a chat, a joke or just someone to ask how you are doing. That’s the best advice I can give you so far as a budding online entrepreneur.

Life is all about adapting yourself, some people are good at it and others just don’t know how to.

When I lived in India I had my own store, an Internet/LAN gaming cafe, in partnership with two other guys.

On this one particular day the cable guy was coming to hook up the TV. All he had to do was to get the wire to go through a hole in the wall to get it into the premises so we could hook it up to the TV. This task involved getting a ladder so he could get to the appropriate height as the hole in the wall was over 10 feet up.

He asked us to call an electrician to do that.

Now clearly something was amiss here, either he was just being lazy or he simply didn’t have the ingenuity in him to get a chair on top of a table, which were available, or travel with a ladder, as you would expect a cable guy to have, to get the job done. But instead he asked us to call an electrician as the task of putting a wire through a hole in the wall was far too technical for him to handle.

Clearly something was amiss here. I noticed this behavior in many people with whom I worked with from 1999 - 2004 {I went solo after ‘04}. They either felt that a certain task was above their pay package or that they simply “thought” they could not perform a certain task, because they were described their job duties in orientation and everything else seemed alien to them.

Here is where the nature of a person comes into play and the difference between someone getting a promotion, or going on there own, or someone just staying a technician that travels in a bus to install cable without even a pair of pliers in his backpack. But the bill book firmly in their hand.

Adapting is key to survival, every species on Earth does it. So if you say to yourself that you are able to do one thing and one thing only, guess what? You will be left behind doing that one thing for the rest of your life.

So how good are you at adapting yourself?

As for the cable guy, I placed a chair on top of a table got up on it and slipped the cable wire through the hole. The “cable guy” just stood there looking on in amazement as I, an “ordinary guy”, did that.

You take the time to write a well thought out email to your peers, the ones that have been blogging in your niche for as long as you can remember, in the hope that they will take notice of you and perhaps even mention you in a blog post or link to one of your articles…or gasp!, even subscribe to your RSS feed.

Then nothing happens…

This probably sounds familiar to a lot of people who are either new to blogging or even those that are seasoned but not so well connected. The drawback here is mostly due to no personal contact.

Recent blog expo’s, industry meet up points like SXSW and other such events have always helped other bloggers who were starting out get beyond others who started at the same time as them. The probability of getting noticed by other popular bloggers, and making an impact, is much higher at a meet like this than sending them email upon email.

It’s either that or a slew of social media successes that can lead you to get noticed. Let’s face it, the world of blogging is all about getting noticed and being read. It also requires a certain bit of charisma and personal appeal that many people, sadly, don’t exhibit via their writing in their blogs even though they may posses an insane amount of it in their personality.

The pool of bloggers that have gotten popular solely because of their writing is very few and far between - sometimes it’s also a bit of luck and being in the game for a longer period of time.

The possibility that your blog will get read and linked to without a solid networking plan in mind is virtually nil. So the next time you find that other popular bloggers never email you back, or even acknowledge your emails, don’t worry that’s only because everyone out there is emailing them too. Those bloggers are human after all and they cannot reply to everyone.

You might get lucky one day though, so never stop bugging them. Remember persistence does pay off.

I always get excited about blogging all over again when I give my blog a makeover. I recently took my SuperPress theme and gave this blog a whole new look. That one little change just gave me a whole new channel of energy to get back into blogging more frequently once again over here, as I’ve not been blogging much over the past couple of weeks.

So how can a blog makeover give you that extra drive to write posts again? Mostly because everything feels and IS new on the outside. It’s like when you get a new t-shirt that just looks so cool and you can’t wait to wear it out and show it off to your family or friends or mostly just to feel good about yourself.

The feel good factor that a new look gives you is tremendous it just gives you new energy, or revives it, to do more.

So the next time you feel like your blogging is just getting nowhere or you see your enthusiasm slowly declining go ahead and take the time to get your blog a makeover.

It is well worth it.

The geographic difference between most of the worlds poor and better off is either just a street, a dividing wall or sometimes it’s right outside the “better off” persons door.

If everyone, that’s YOU, could do just ONE thing to help ONE poor person it would make a world of difference. I’m not asking you to support a whole village, give monthly donations {though that’s not a bad idea} or keep giving to charities without knowing what’s exactly going to happen to your money. No, instead just help ONE poor person.

How?

Here’s a few simple things you could do -

Donate your bicycle, bike or an old car to a needy person or family - Mobility helps poor people get jobs. If you live in a city with a good public transport system buy a transit pass for one person help get to an interview for a job.

Donate your old electronics - We throw away so much electrical equipment today it’s not even funny. Donate your TV, old computer, radios, phones etc… to a local shelter or community center where disadvantaged people meet. They’ll use it to get better informed. They’ll figure out for themselves that Knowledge is Power.

Provide knowledge - A lot of the worlds poor can read, they just don’t have any books. Get it?

Talk to a poor person - Sometimes they need someone to talk too, just like you and me.

Here we are almost at the end of 2008 so I thought I might give my ‘ol blog a little makeover. I took this very awesome WordPress theme and did a little bit of tinkering around and voila! I now have a new look. Took me all of a few hours to get things styled the way I wanted them.

The theme backend from SuperPress really allows me to customize the front end of the blog to no limit. I can turn modules off and on whenever I feel like to give the home page a little breath of fresh air. If that isn’t awesome, I don’t know what is!

The time it took me to customize this was virtually nothing compared to the the amount of time I usually spend on giving my blog design clients their kickass blog designs. Which means it’s easier than ever now to get a kickass blog design for yourself at a TENTH of the cost!

If you are still thinking about getting SuperPress here’s a bonus for you!

Simply buy SuperPress anytime in this month and leave a comment on this post. Here’s a 25% discount coupon code to use on SuperPress Light - 81ABE

I will pick one lucky winner to get a full customized version of SuperPress. The best part is, no matter how I customize your blog you will still be able to take FULL advantage of all the modules/options within SuperPress.

I guarantee it!

Just to show you what EverybodyGoTo looked like before -

Hope to award you a full customization
