Don’t Beat The Competition, Be Competed Against!

Have you ever asked yourself why you are always trying to beat the competition instead of being competed against?

Think about it, you’re trying to be better than your colleague at work. You are trying to attract more customers than the guy across the street, rack more sales up at work, be “employee of the month”, trying to better your score against someone else at the the golf course/darts/scrabble?, you’re trying to outdo the other bloggers with content and all sort of scenarios online that just has you stuck in a rat race.

STOP!

Why are you trying to beat them? When you could easily be the one who everyone is competing against. Almost everything original has already been done or said. Now, it’s just a matter of who finds history first and repeats it.

Many old school lessons are being reverberated today with new age words, prettier pictures and statistical graphs. Anybody can do that, in any area of life.

But I don’t have the money?

That’s OK, neither did the people who are on top today. True riches are not on paper, they are in your mind. While it is true that somethings do require some sort of capital to start, especially in the real world, that is not the case online.

All you require to be on the receiving end of success, and being competed against, online is time.

So how can you stop worrying about the ever growing competition in today’s world? Where information moves at the speed of light and your ideas can be duplicated by someone else in less time it takes you to think the process through?

I started thinking about this and came up with these points below here -

1. Stop worrying about your competition - Observe them instead. Don’t copy them, don’t imitate them, just observe them. If they make mistakes, learn from them.

2. Build YOUR product, with care - Nurture your ideas, take your time. Excellence should never be rushed.

3. Forget about marketing - Service and attention to detail is usually the top reason word of mouth marketing will help your product sell itself.

4. Stay passionate - If you find yourself drifting out of your passion, then you need a break. You’re human after all.

5. Write down your accomplishments - When you’ve forgotten everything you’ve ever done, your notes will remind you over and over again. There, you’ve just motivated yourself.

6. Give yourself time limits - Ready, set, GO! Mark a finish line for yourself, the race has to end sometime!

7. Ask for help - One men armies rarely succeed {if never}. You might just find the perfect combination.

8. Use tools that help you, not disrupt you -The less there is around to distract you the more work you will eventually do.

9. Little victories - Focus on small victories, they will eventually sum up to the bigger one.

Hope these tips help you out, and I hope people start competing against you in the near future.

  1. Most stuff online exist because of marketing. I would suggest keeping at least 40% of your budget for marketing. Use adwords if you are targeting normal people, but go with other innovative methods if you are looking for webmaster crowd ;)

  2. great post, Hyder. I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Word of mouth really is the best kind of marketing because it is usually more credible.

  3. @TheAnand - I just think word of mouth is probably the best thing that can happen to you. I’ve experienced it myself so I can say it does work.

    @James - Thanks :smile:

  5. I like it, simple and effective. Leading the pack from the get-go, despite the fact that you may not actually be more popular, is something I’ve tried to do from the start of my blogging career. I think that it’s definitely important to focus on smaller victories, and just by acting like a leader you can be seen as competition by your peers.
