Recently Yahoo! decided its time to compete directly with Google’s offering Gmail head on. What did they do? They went ahead and started offering Yahoo! Mail under the domain aliases like RocketMail and YMail. What the duck? With the age of short and easy to remember email addresses, RocketMail is for the nostalgic and is YMail a competition to Gmail (Name wise only!).
I am a die-hard fan of Yahoo! Services since they have my admiration for being a people company than try to be a corporate monster like Microsoft or even a selfish Google for that matter. Yahoo! as a company has had a reputation for being a humane company which has some social responsibility too. Remember their go green initiatives and support for the transexuals? And they have been the pioneers in a lot of things too.
Though I bashed up Yahoo! in the opening, there are a lot of things that make me stay with Yahoo! and even had me upgrade to their premium offering with 2$ a month.
- Their Mobile offering, the Yahoo! Go is simply the best mobile email application that I came accross. Gets me my email, my weather alerts and Flickr. This along with their Addressbook Sync on my Windows Mobile simply rocks! Even of my buggy Windows crashes, my contact information is safe
- Address book Merge:This merges the contacts in your list helping you consolidate the contacts which is a life save if you have not been living very organized!
- Temporary Email ids: This is something very very important to me as I go around putting in my email on every other marketing list for a download or two. Last time I heard, Gmail provided temporary emails with “+” which was not accepted with most forms out there!
- Chat, Text, Feeds and Emails in One! The best feature. When someone sends me their phone number through chat, I just text it myself and save it in the phone later on. And the interface is so pretty
- Yahoo! Mail is still Yahoo!’s offering, not Microhoos
So, it will be safe to use for now.
