Information is limitless. There is no end to it. But there should come a time when you need to decide when to stop learning and start doing what you already know. Let your intuition take over and let your own instincts guide you.
You have the ability to do virtually anything you want. Most of us tend to absorb more by doing. A lot of people though don’t know when to make the fine transition, or maintain a healthy balance, from learning to doing.
I’m no expert myself, but here are a few points I can share with you for when I stopped learning and just started doing. These steps could be applicable in many scenarios, I’ll let you decide if it fits yours.
Stop Learning And Start Doing
- Master what you are learning on the job - You need to realize that you can accelerate your learning by practice. I’m not a master at PHP but that has not stopped me from designing and coding WordPress themes which is built using PHP. I’m learning everyday as I go along. If had stopped to learn the language, before I got started, I would probably have not landed John Cow’s design. Which started it all for me.
- Pick a point and take off - Fact is, you need to know something about anything to get started, not everything. Pick a point till where you are comfortable learning and then just let yourself go. There is nothing better than realizing your own weaknesses and improving upon them. I didn’t even know CSS when I got my first web project in 2002, I believe I got paid $500 for it. I literally walked out of my apartment and went to the first commercial establishment down my street and asked to build their website.
- Ask for help - Lay your pride aside, suck it up and ask for help. You need it, everyone needs it. You cannot run the show by yourself. If you want to be successful, surround yourself with people you can always turn to for help. That’s how you get places.
- Learn from your failures - If you succeed at first, great! If you don’t succeed at first - try, try again. Just don’t trip over the same stone twice. Failing at something is not bad, in fact I think it’s the best thing that can happen to you. Because now you know what other people do not.
- Learn and practice, side by side - If you have learned something for an entire week, spend the next entire week {and more} putting into practice exactly what you learned. You might just find out something new that you would never have in a classroom setting.
