Did you ever stop to think what it is exactly that blogging is offering you? Why are you actually doing it? What is the offer that makes you so driven to go through setting up a blog and start writing post after post, day after day?
Obviously, you are being made an offer you can’t refuse, right?
Money, fame, creative release, better job prospects, experimentation, changing your work lifestyle, just bored, perversion, fascination with a topic, interaction, networking…and the list goes on. So what is the offer that enticed you to come on board the blogging train?
Mind you we have “classes” here as well, just like the sick perverted system in real life where everybody puts up invisible boundaries, while nonchalantly saying to themselves and others that there are none. Yeah right. Here on the internet they call it the long tail and I guess the short tail of the blogosphere.
The long tail of the blogosphere is where the new entrants will start. You’re going to try and catch up, some of you will, most of you won’t. But the thing is, there is no real distinction between the long and the short. Nobody really knows where one ends and the other one starts. Most are unaware that there is even such a thing!
Some might say you’re in the short tail if you’ve crossed a certain RSS reader mark, which I’ll attest is nothing but a status game, some say its if you get digg.com front page stories, or are popular in other social media sites like StumbleUpon. Sometimes it takes to be linked by the “big boys”, or featured on a news aggregator like TechMeme, or attend a trade show etc…etc… You do as much as you can and when you start to see some results, you will inevitably ask yourself. So this is it? This is what I couldn’t resist having.
Endless hours sitting behind a computer trying to break a story before everyone else. Making sure you get first dibs on a new product launch, creating as many lists of tips and tricks as possible. Trying to blog as much as possible for a few penny clicks on CPC ads? {OK, well you can make the crisp bills too}
That’s it!?!
Sure, it’s fun for a while. I had a blast writing up as many reviews as possible, made some good money along the way as well. But not anymore, I’ve stopped chasing the carrot. I’ve stopped chasing something which will just take me deeper into the rabbit hole. It’s not about what blogging is offering me, it’s about what I can offer myself.
I don’t buy your “long tail” or “short tail” theories. I’ll make up my own, and give myself a class of my own. I don’t need you to classify me, and you shouldn’t let anyone else classify you either.
This may seem like a rant, but it’s not. It’s just a wake up call for me. If I want to think outside boundaries, I thought I’d write something out of my own (boundaries) to give my presence here more meaning to me. You may choose to see beyond what I wrote above, or you can chase the carrot.

For me it is about making money, hopefully getting discovered as a writer and also being known for getting massive traffic to my site. Guess this is where you were a long time ago. Main thing is to have fun with it.
