Have Blog, Will Travel

One good thing about deriving income from your blog, or online generally, is that even when you are away it keeps working for you. If you make money online your office space is pretty much around 17″ wide and portable, provided you have a laptop. While some trips can be a mixture of both pleasure and business, it’s good once in a while to get unplugged and come back all charged up for another couple of months.

I will be traveling soon and though it will mostly be a pleasure trip, I also intend to keep up to date with posting. It’s not really that hard to stay on top of posting because at any point of time I have around half a dozen posts semi written out, so it’s just a matter of finishing them up and placing them on auto publish.

But the most cool thing you can do while traveling is to pick up new pieces of conversation and observations for posting once you get back. You could also post while traveling, taking your readers on a little trip with you. Hopefully I’ll try and meet up with some local netpreneurs, or bloggers even, and see what they are doing in their respective fields. I also plan on introducing a near relative, who recently quite their day job, into blogging and helping him/her make an income online. That should be an interesting case study.

A lot of bloggers get guest posters to come on board and submit posts, some even have dedicated writers. So even if they went away for a whole week or two it wouldn’t make that much of a difference to regular readers. As they are probably used to the dedicated writers of the blog. This is one reason why you need to connect early with a few bloggers and even get them on your IM list. So you know who to contact in times like these.

For instance recently John Cow went away to Spain for a few days. He sent me an email via his BlackBerry asking if I could do a guest post. I got the login details and went about doing so. He hadn’t got back yet for another 2 days and seeing that his blog looked dry I took the liberty of logging in and making another guest post - completely unannounced. Naturally I linked to my blog on both guest posts, and of course I did get some traffic from the posts I made.

So if you have a blog you can most certainly rely on your own readers, and fellow bloggers, for a helping hand while you travel. Any other incentive you provide on your part is completely up to you.
