This post is part of Blog Action Day. You can make a difference too, just write about the environment.
There are only so many people in this world who will make an actual difference for the rest of us. Some of them will make the wrong differences, and some will make the right ones. But many of us make little to none. Yet you can help negate the effect that is the driving case for the most cause of concern today, our environment.
Many of us discuss with friends and colleagues, or ask ourselves, what can be done, what needs to be done and how to go about doing something to make a change. A few years ago you couldn’t have made much of an impact all by yourself in such a short amount of time. But today it couldn’t have been easier as traditional media is slowly being replaced by “user media”.
Make That Change
I do whatever I can to make a difference for my environment.
- I recycle as much as I can
- Buy only products that don’t use too much packaging
- Shop for Organic and natural food as much as possible
- etc…
But that’s only me, in fact I was not always like that. I have my wife to thank for making me realize more than I did. She almost dumped me once when I threw a plastic bag on the road - I had to pick it up or else. I’m glad I did.
Many of us blog today and our words are probably taken more seriously than the news presenter who reads to you every night. So you have the means to a change right at your fingertips, but don’t let it end there. Look around you there is so much that can be done. Just think about it for a minute.
Go ahead, stop reading this and do it now. Look around your room, your cubicle or your house and see what difference you can make in your ecosystem.
A few steps can go a long way.
Tips and Advices
- If you travel to work everyday, car pool. If it’s close take the bus, or train, at least once a week or even better - your bike!
- If you work at home, shut your computer off at night. Only use what lights are necessary during the day and evening, turn off as you leave a room.
- Start with a few bio-degradable packaged products, or buy some Organic produce.
- Plant a tree, or buy some potted plants for your home. Gift a plant, instead of roses, they last longer.
- Keep a cup at your office desk and use that instead of a new paper cup every time.
I would also like to provide a more objective view on some things. This is the kind of stuff that annoys me. Some of you may agree, some may not -
- Demonstrations, petitions, meets, walks and conference calls, they don’t work as effectively as one would think. Just because people come out in numbers doesn’t mean the big boys {read industries and governments} actually care about what you have to say. They know you’ll go home and won’t come back the next day and they control the
buckEuro. - Don’t believe experts literally. They only know a little bit more than you do, you can become an expert yourself. Just read up. Being lazy is your only excuse if you don’t.
- As soon as they say “A new study has shown that a previous study, which was was done on the original study, had some anomalies” - you should know by now that they have no idea what they’re doing with themselves.
- Just because it’s on sale doesn’t mean you have to buy it. Stop being fooled! You’re a victim of capitalism. I keep resisting everyday and at the end of the day I feel happy that I haven’t cluttered my home any more.
Write your post down, get your readers involved and take action!

I’ve considered writing about blog action day but I tend to stay away from off-topic blogging, however this is a great post, even if it is off-topic.

Michael,
I believe the environment is even more on topic, in the tech sector, today more than ever before in history. It is technology which is the driving cause of most of the planet’s waste, not to mention the hazardous materials used in the production of tech products.

I can’t agree more.
We as consumers can only really affect change by changing our purchasing habits. Purchase products that have minimal packaging. (as suggested) Stop buying bottled water! Bottle your own with water that you have filtered. Carpooling is the quickest and most effective way to create change. (as suggested) If 150 million people drive every day. A simple carpool(1 extra person in your car) would eliminate half the cars on the freeway. No traffic jam! Yay!
Here are some radical ideas.
1. Compost your yard waste and vegetable scraps.
2. Paint asphalt white (reflect some heat)
3. Buy a solar energy system for your home.
4. Buy a wind energy system for your home.
5. Stop buying SUV’s
6. …
this list could go on forever.
If we wait for “them” to do it, it’ll take forever just for them to decide to do something. Then a bit more of forever to decide who is going to do what.
Take action today!

I’ve been reading a few great posts on Blog Action day recently! It should also be emphasised that people stand to save money from a number of the ideas you’ve suggested… it’s a bit selfish but it is a great incentive to take action
