The Google Link Smackdown, And Why You Shouldn’t Care

Google has been penalizing sites by dropping their PageRank a point to even two points, even me from a PR5 to 4. Mostly because of the fact that some of the sites sell text links on their site, or do sponsored reviews. What a bunch of crap!

You know at times like these most people tend to get all worried and scatter around doing changes, emailing Google {good luck with that}, posting in forums and even posting on their blog about it. I’m not going to get into a whole big discussion about the ethics of people trying to make money from their online properties by selling links or doing sponsored posts, as that is not my concern. Instead I’ll just reflect a little bit and tell you Why you shouldn’t care what “Google” does with that green line on their toolbar.

  • First of all, They don’t own the internet - They never have and they never will.
  • What goes up must come down - You think they’ll last forever? I don’t care what Wall Street thinks with their forecasts. One day a new player will rise and then you can really watch Google Dance.
  • People made a living before Google - And they will continue to do it with or without them, whether they like how people use their search engine to do so or not.
  • You don’t depend on your Mom and Dad after you move out - So why do you depend on Google? Sell those links!
  • Google needs us more than we need them - Period.
  • Building a strong community can do wonders for your online properties - And you don’t need Google to help you with that.
  • I’m not pissed at Google - Just telling them why they shouldn’t be pissed at me because I tried to make some money - if they can do it so can I.

So life goes on, the world makes another rotation around the sun, yes it’s NOT flat, and I’ll still be looking to make money on my blog. Whether Google thinks it’s evil or not.

In conclusion -

You cannot make an algorithm smarter than a human, because a human built the algorithm.

  1. yeah, I agree. Luckly, for me, I just started my blog so the PR has yet to come out on it. I really don’t care if it does. I like Google, but like you said, I want to make money with my blogging so if Google gets in the way of that, then their just another search engine that I never use. {alright, how can you not use Google? :P } Anyway, I noticed you’ve decreased the number of sponsored posts you where doing. Is that just b/c your so busy? Or b/c worthy ones are getting so hard to find? I have ads on my blog, but very minimally, so I was wondering how sponsored posts fit into your overall revenue from this blog. Can you give me a percentage?

  2. I have to agree as well. While 95% or more of searches that reach my site come from Google, that still only accounts for 5% (or less) of the people who actually visit. I get about half my visitors from referring sites, and another half from direct traffic. I love Google’s tools, but their search leaves a lot to be desired.

  3. yeah I don’t know why google cares so much

  4. You are 100% right, I hope that one of the googlers read this article!

  5. i think its inevitable, that we publisher have to go through all the ‘hoops’ by google and advertisers as it’s requirement.

going on your ‘own’ will be harder, but not impossible
