One part of my recently launched blog design company, Weborithm, is called “Idea Labs”. I regularly discuss some open source ideas whenever I think of them on this blog. I decided to keep a few for myself and develop them. My recent posts cover the designing and initial steps. Now its time to talk about the hiccups.
Time
My web product is taking longer than I thought. I don’t mind though, my developer is coding it in his free time while I design the layout and CSS in my free time. Once we make a few million dollars and bask in our success he can quit his day job and I can well…ummm…I don’t know. I might just continue blogging.
But seriously, executing a web product is so much more complex than people imagine. The time, effort and most of all debugging that even an XHTML/CSS page can take is the major factor in projects taking too long and sometimes even going over budget. This doesn’t mean that a designer or coders skills are lacking. This just means that sometimes ideas, methods and output don’t match. The process to getting them to match cost time.
Learning
When you’re building something for yourself, you will inevitably plunge yourself to try out new and different methods, tricks, code, styles etc… So just soak up all the knowledge while you can. After all you are working for yourself this time, unconstrained by deadlines.
I’ve learned so much more in the time since I first thought of the idea to the present day. My product is around 50% into it’s beta stage at this point of time. By the time we get to version 0.9 I’ll have gained so much more in terms of knowledge that the time will be worth it.
A little bit about the product
- It is not a standalone product
- It involves an “in site popup”
- It’s AJAX powered
- Will enable you to make money without using a third party service
- Will give the big players a run for their money
- Has HUGE potential
- Did I mention you can make money with it?
So yeah, right now a few hiccups have come up in the development process. Which is good because we can iron out all the bugs before launch and make sure this product really rocks.
Once we are ready for beta testers, some of my readers will be the first to know about it and try it out. Sign up to my full RSS feed to find when that happens.

Yeah – I think people often under-estimate the time a project will take. It’s easy to say this will take 3 days and that 2 days, but testing (in all it’s various forms – Unit/User etc) takes time. You’ve also got to factor in the time it takes to report any bugs and then fix them.
Project management is a tricky subject.
