What’s The Hottest Topic in Blogging?
A lot of people start blogs centered around what they like the most. Sooner or later their trickle of traffic starts to grow, with a growing community of readers alongside. Eventually the thought of money pops in your head, if it doesn’t - you must be weird. If you are going to monetize your content at some of point of time in the future, might as well blog on something that is hot on the web right? The more popular your niche, the more money you can make.
So, What’s the hottest topic in blogging? Here’s a few niches to ponder over -
Making Money Online
Be careful with this blogging topic. If you don’t make at least a few thousand a month from nothing else but the internet, then you best stay away from it. Be it in affiliate marketing, selling ads, just plain old raw traffic clicking on your PPC blocks or whatever. As long as you have made a significant steady financial income from internet activities you better not claim to be a guru on making money online. Otherwise you’ll just be preaching to yourself.
Popular blogs in this niche are - ShoeMoney.com, ProBlogger.net, JohnChow.com etc…
Web 2.0
Lame term, yes I know. But going from the attention they get from social bookmarking sites, new web services that are tripped out with AJAX are always a hit with most mainstream internet users. I’ve written quite a bit on tons of web 2.0 startups myself, but I seldom do any nowadays. I just can’t throw out 10 to 20 posts a day on every new startup that launches with a “new” feature. If you aren’t overtly enthusiastic about it, your interest may wind down at some point of time or the other. I still do them, just more spaced out.
Popular blogs in this niche are - TechCrunch.com, Mashable.com, GigaOm.com, ReadWriteWeb.com etc…
Technology/Electronics/Gadgets
People like shiny new toys with LED lights. If you can get a couple of scoops a week or month on new product launches or have “sources” inside the industry to provide you with content you can make quite a bang in this blogging niche. Imagine being responsible for wiping $4 Billion off Apple’s market cap in an afternoon. That’s what Engadget.com, a tech blog, did once when they posted a story about delays in the shipment for Apple’s Leopard. With great blogging, comes great responsibility.
Popular blogs in this niche - Engadget.com, Gizmodo.com, ArsTechnica.com, OhGizmo.com etc…
SEO/Design/Software
Very broad categories, but they are all related. Any one of those topics are a surefire hit on social sites, especially if you’ve made some really neat CSS tricks, a cool new photoshop Tutorial or free software. If you know why Google hasn’t updated PR yet for this September, then you’re gold right about now.
Popular blogs in this niche are - MattCutts.com, PronetAdvertising.com, FreelanceSwitch.com, LifeHacker.com etc…
I could go on and on. Even though with all these big players in town there is still PLENTY of space for anyone to blog on in and take a spot for themselves.
You just need to give your topic a heat of it’s own.

Great post. I was getting a little worried that I had maybe picked a too saturated niche {tech/web 2.0} from what I was hearing, but I really like writing about that stuff so I’ll stick with it.
Dugg.
Great post, but you forgot to mention everybodygoto.com. =p
heh, got to be modest you know
I don’t know whether you noticed about this. Try to search “make money online” in Google.com, no results will appear…
Personally, although I am interested in the Web2.0 craze, I just can’t see a future in it. I prefer writing articles on technology, less on “newsy” type posts that can date quite quickly.
A recent one was harassing Web2.0, because really all the technology has been around for decades. I prefer to call it Web16.0
You can have a read - - Oh and for anyone that does , I’d love to get some feedback on it, I’ve been reading blogs for quite a while, but I’m new to writing one.
But all these niches are over saturated and it’s very very hard to get a buzz for a new blog unless you’ve got a pile of cash (big one) or a brilliant idea (like the one behind johncow.com
).
That’s why i believe new bloggers should point their attention and efforts to different domains, that will become interesting in the near future, like green technologies, ecology, alternative fuels. I believe those niches could be successful in a couple of years
I disagree with Mike above. I think that if you know you topic and write consistently good and informative articles then you’ll eventually get the recognition you deserve. It takes time and effort thats all.
Neil is right. I have seen many a new blog grow on the topic of “making money online” most recent example would be, One Mans Goal. He built this blog up fast, had a loyal folowing, got linked to from top bloggers, and recently sold it for $8,000.
It can be done. I attribute his fast success to really good writing and really good marketing. He actually made it look real easy, when it is anything but.
I’m not quite as good as he is, but my niche is not make money online, it is online entrepreneurs, and this article has given me a new idea on my angle.
Missy.
The scary thing is it’s actually true, and it goes to show you
how the internet really does make anything possible when you have
the right information, tools and mindset.
