Best Ad Placements For Your Blog

I've been experimenting quite a bit on various types of Ad placements on this blog and overall the results are satisfactory.

What Advertising?

I have a 160 X 600 Google Adsense block on the sidebar and that's about it. I used to have a 300 X 250 block within every post and a 468 X 60 block right before the comments. I removed the 300 X 250 block within the post, even though it was doing well, to make my posts look readable, along with one other reason. I kept the 468 X 60 that was before the comments and added a 300 X 250 to show up after the comments.

None of them were very successful, partly because I don't get those many comments and a good chunk of my visitors are search engine based. Meaning they click through to the site, get the link they want and leave. So I removed both the Ad blocks around my comments. {I'm now experimenting with a Chitika Ad below the comments}

Basically, Ads around your comments don't work.

Look at your statistics

I then did a little statistics digging. To see what were my most visited pages and revise only those with a 300 X 250 block. Though a very important point here is that I only adjusted those pages which had a high search engine visibility or a huge stickiness factor. How do you make content with those properties? Well, go through my blogging tips to find out.

So I'm now targeting two types of individuals on these posts -

  • The person that looks for specific resources/information/etc... and just wants a link to get there. This person will mostly press the back button to revisit my post and look for something else. That's when they see some relevant ads and click - I get paid. {They might also just go ahead and click on an Ad, if it's relevant enough, the first time itself.}
  • The other type of person wants to know more and will not mind staying on your post as well as reading other posts. But they will only stay if your content is sticky. Once they've read enough, they automatically search for an exit. That's when an Ad catches their eye, click - I get paid again.

Some of my posts get an average of 100+ hits a day, yes that's right - advertise with me, so I went ahead and added a 300 X 250 block right above all the content. Not to the right, or the bottom, or the left. Above all the content.

Let's just suffice to say that I've already tripled last months take in that channel within 10 days. This has in no way affected any of the clickthroughs on non-Ad links, in fact they've increased.

So what are the Best Places to Show Ads on your Blog?

The posts that get the most traffic, not each and every single post. Because then it just gets ugly, and nobody will click on anything.

Some people may disagree with me, well that's because they have higher traffic levels. Higher traffic levels generally mean more earnings on the internet.

    I only have two ad blocks on my site, one at the top of my homepage above the content (468×60) and one single post pages above the comments (468×60). I want to try placing them in different places but haven’t put a lot of thought into it yet, maybe I’ll experiment a bit over the next few weeks.
