Why Do Printer Ink Cartridges Cost So Much?

Posted by Hyder on July 7th, 2007

Seriously, why do they?

I recently went out to buy my wife a new laptop {got a new Acer} and went browsing around to the printer section to see what’s up, as I don’t own a printer yet. I was amazed to see the prices so low for them that I was almost tempted to buy one. Then I went to look around for the ink, what good is a printer without ink, they were in the next aisle. Understandably so because the prices of the ink cartridges were just ridiculous.

Seriously, it’s just ink! Corporations that sell them like HP have said in the past that sometimes up to 50% of their company profits come from the sale of ink! I should know my sister-in-law is a distributor and they make a killing on the stuff.

But sensing that the average consumer was getting tired of these prices many smart people went into the business of selling refill and/or discounted Inkjet Cartridges, InkShop.co.uk is one such setup.

Carrying the most famous brand names like Brother, Dell, HP, Epson, Lexmark and Canon you can find Printer Cartridges for virtually all of the models of printers to have been ever produced by these manufacturers. Though for a few that I clicked on it said no results were found, but I imagine they have a cartridge for the most popular printer models.

They even sell Laser Toner and Refill Kits. The special offers section was empty at the time of writing maybe they’ll have something drop in later on.

Printer Ink has been compared to a bottle of Chanel No.5 with the Ink being more expensive per ounce. So if you do work at an office in charge of supplies or run a home business, saving money on these things can be beneficial to your bottom line in the long run. I used to work as an office manager and I used to recycle the backsides of printed paper for the next day’s reports, a little extra tip for you reading this.

It’s a known fact that corporations sell printers at cost or even at a loss to make you buy one, only to make it up in ink - much like the mobile industry {except Apple}. So the next time you look for cartridges for your printer have a look at going for refills or suppliers that can offer them for cheaper prices.

I don’t even own a printer because of ink cartridges. I am a lot happier though because I don’t have all of this paper laying around.

I will admit however that occasionally I do miss paper. I miss it when I’m tired of looking at my computer screen all day but I would like to read articles from websites. I’m going to have to go and look at Ink Shop and maybe I’ll change my mind about printers.

Find yourself an old dot-matrix printer. :)

I always wondered the same thing until I heard someone talk about the technology behind the printheads and ink quality. Check out this link:
