The FeedBurner Dance

Posted by Hyder on June 7th, 2007

If some of my visitors may have noticed my feed subscriber numbers keep going up and down by leaps and bounds everyday, well there’s a reason to that. No! Not because my content sucks, it’s because of Google Reader not reporting them properly.

I don’t know if other people are having the same problem, if you are please come forward and comment. It’s quite annoying actually to see it jump up and then suddenly drop like a brick the following day. Which got me thinking…

Does it really matter?

I mean I write about stuff, and obviously a few hundred people are interested to read it. While it is gratifying to see it add up everyday, instead of down, should bloggers really care about how many “numbers” their feedcount displays. Some do, some don’t.

It used to really matter to me a lot recently, not anymore. I’ve grown past it. While it is more or less an invitation to other readers to sign up as well, I would rather that I gain a new reader based on my content and not how many numbers the feedcount display shows.

I guess you could call it the next step in the evolution of a blogger, to focus on doing what you set out to do rather than focus on adding a few more digits in RSS readership.

The Next Step

When I started to write this blog, I had no idea it would be as successful as it has been so far. True, there are other bloggers much more successful than me but I feel I’ve accomplished quite a lot. The next step is now to build on what I have accomplished and extend it further to a point where instead of taking I want to end up giving.

This means that you can expect more of the same quality content I’ve been writing already, along with more of an analytical nature. Plus some surprises ;)

Well, enough about me. Just wanted to get a few words out about this whole up down feed count issue.

Don’t forget, my 1000th commenter wins some money.

Until a few days ago I was concerned about the number of RSS readers but I think got over it. More important is writing quality content and the readers will come along.

This keeps happening to me too. I went from 80 down to 65 in one day. I knew it must have been an error somewhere. So I don’t even think it’s worth having the counter up if it’s not accurate.

  3. More Web Site Traffic

I havent had any trouble with it lately, we stick around the same amount of subscribers usually

We’ve seen a pretty big shift in numbers as well. As you said, I don’t really care. If I were pay attention to the number of readers then I would start to write articles to do nothing more than increase my reader base. If I ignore the stats then I can concentrate on content, just as you said, and tell the real story.

Ultimately it’s all about the content. If users are interested then they will read what I have to write. If I do a good job reporting and analyzing, then the reader base will grow. Seems to have worked well so far.

    Anyhow, just my $0.02.
