Search is one of the most important elements of internet browsing today. Many people bookmark and subscribe to RSS feeds to stay up to date. But sometimes it’s fun to just browse around and see what’s new from other websites, or online shopping sites. Though with the amount of information out there it can get quite overwhelming.
To try and help solve that, Twenga is a UK based shopping search engine that aggregates merchant offers and puts them all together in a shopping comparison format. They mostly concentrate on the European market and as of now they are present in France, UK, Spain and Italy. Launched in 2006 the site is laid out in a shopping portal type way that most of us are accustomed to. I feel they could have done a better job with the navigation and their logo design, but there probably is a reason to that. Since a lot of people are still comfortable with the way the web looked a couple of years ago and all this “Web 2.0′ness” might not be the best way to convert visitors into money.
Upon landing on the homepage you are given your choices to browse through category, favorite brand or the top deals page. Being the tech freak I went into the computers first and browsed around. A huge array of products sorted by categories was presented. You can immediately see how many up-to-date offers and price drops there are as well the amount of consumer and expert reviews.
The other categories I looked into like Cars and Motorbikes, Video Gaming and Fashion were similarly structured. Going further in you can also see any recent news about the product you are looking at, which is also aggregated from a wide variety of sites.
Signing up for an account will get you access to services such as price alerts, weekly newsletter and more that are in development. Though I wish their popular queries page was working {it wasn’t when I tried it}, it would be nice to see what other people are searching for. But then I guess that’s why the logo says “beta version”.
Give Twenga a go.
