It seems they didn't have to wear ear plugs during the test procedure back then and something about the bounce impact sound waves combined with the force of the bounce going up the spine triggers some primal response later on in life creating the impression that they can still hear the sound even when they are in bed with their eyes closed trying to go to sleep.
