How Digg can become the next Google

Can digg.com a site that Kevin Rose spent a couple of hundred dollars creating, and which attracts over 1 million unique visitors a month, overthrow Google.com - the world’s leading search engine! Let’s read a little bit about how they can accomplish that. (mock up design included below)

On digg anybody can create a profile and submit a story and if it gets enough diggs it will get promoted to the front page where as many as 10’s of thousands of people can visit your site every hour for as long as it is on the front page. But the deluge isn’t over yet!

Soon after, if not immediately, you will get bookmarked on other similar sites like del.icio.us, reddit and stumbleupon where sure enough you can also expect to see similar results, though less crippling.

Ok, So how the heck can they become the next Google?

They just need to go portal, get a few more million dollars in VC capital for servers, coders and marketing. Let everyone have free email, wouldn’t it be cool if you had your own name@digg.com which of course would be invite only with a nice shiny beta tag.

Fix their search, which currently sucks, improve their profile pages and add more features like site blocking for instance and maybe an organizer within email like a calendar which would somehow show you the top dugg stories within your favorite topics.

Plus many other things which I’m sure they can think off.

A nice payback to current users would be to go public and give all registered diggers a certain amount of shares based on their history or a discount.

How would it look?

I did a little mock up here so you guys can see how digg would/could look like in a search engine/portal type of setup.

  1. You never know maybe it will happen? ;)

  2. I don’t know about this one man. Digg’s search engine seems to have been written by a group of monkeys banging their heads against keyboards in an attempt to get another “special treat” from Mr. Rose.

  3. I think Digg is destined for the garbage bin pretty soon - have you NOT noticed how corrupt the system is? http://allsux.com
