Starting your own business

Around 2 years ago me and my family made the bold decision to leave our day jobs and get into our own business. Since we were from an apparel background that’s what we headed into.

Let me tell it was not the easiest decision or the most easiest journey to make. Starting up your own business takes a lot out of you physically, emotionally and financially. If you are not strong to bear all of them at the same time don’t get into it. But then that would be wrong advice now wouldn’t it? I actually encourage you to make mistakes, screw up, fall flat on your face because when you do start getting back up again - IT IS THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD!!!

You can only feel the real taste of success if you have faced some sort of trouble getting there. The key to it all is to be strong in your head and accept every day as it comes by to you. Find within yourself what you really want to do and take the time (don’t quit your day job yet) study, learn, examine others in the business, see what they are doing and what they are not. Make your plan, be patient and dive in.

Being scared is perfectly alright, in fact if you aren’t then your ego has gotten the better of you. I learned in my business a lot of things concerning how to handle human resources, dealing with other people, prioritizing and most of all I learned how to never give up.

If you are planning on setting up your own business have a look at these business opportunities and see if there is anything right for you.

The best part about being your own boss is the flexibility to work when you want and how you want. Now of course you will sometimes be faced with the times when you have to work extra hard long hours. But then again remember you don’t need to lift a finger for days at a time, especially when you know that the business is rolling in even while you sleep.

With the internet today it has become an avenue where upon if you build now the streets will have to criss cross you sooner or later and people will pass by all the time. Some will say hi and move along, some will stop a while and some will come back everyday. So for the time being I’m building my avenue and I’m already seeing the streets.

I haven’t given up on my dream of owning my own apparel company yet (apparel business opportunities). In fact we plan on bringing it back within this year and that’s my goal. So go and set your own goals and become your own boss.

This post was sponsored and the feeling was real.

  1. Yes! I couldn’t agree more! I have two home based businesses and I love them. Sometime tricky to disapline myself to the computer and not the yard work that needs to be done but I would not have it any other way. In today’s world where “down sizing”, “cut backs” and “layoffs” are frequent terms, there is nothing better than having the security of being your own boss. Please visit http://www.christybarber.usana.com to see if there is another healthy opportunity for you there. Email me and we’ll discuss your options or if you would like samples let me know. Let’s achieve wealth and health together!

  2. Right on! I, too, have a very successful home based business (started it in June 2004, husband and I both left day jobs within 3 months). Anyway, most people fail at business for 3 specific reasons: 1) They fail to treat the business like a business. Meaning, they work with no plan, hope for success and do not structure their work time. 2) Lack of faith in themselves and their business. All they do is hope they can find success, instead of expecting to succeed. 3) Work hard, not smart. Let’s face it, it does not take working 24 hours per day to build a business. I learned the hard way. When I was working my business 15 hours per day, I found myself stuck. But when I started structuring my day, using my time wisely, and enjoying my life, my business took off like wildfire.

So go for it, make a plan, work your plan, have faith and expectation and live your life. Afterall, why do we start our own businesses anyway, to live our life by our design.

    To your success.

  3. Glad to see people with vision and perseverance responding.

It does take a lot from you when you plan on working for yourself be it selling home made cabinets to making money with blogs. Staying the course, planning and drive are the main factors that will determine your outcome.

  4. Yeah, when I have a LITTLE success in the horizon, I have to push through all my problems to break even.

  5. I’ve owned my own businesses since two years after I got out of college. I quickly learned that it’s the only way to have the freedom to choose your own lifestyle and control your own destiny.

But it isn’t all easy. I’ve had years where I was able to bring in $250+K, followed by years where I wasn’t able to pull anything out of the business and had to sell our house to make payroll and keep our business(es) going. It can be stressful, and cause great strain on your family and marriage.

My guiding principle came from a quote I saw somewhere… “Think like an owner, but work like an employee”. Owning your own business is tough work, and you need to hire people to help you achieve your goals. But you also need to work harder than anyone you do employ, because none of your employees will work harder than you do. If you set your own bar high, the business will follow.

Persistence is also key. Business is all about relationships and staying power. Your #1 goal has to be doing whatever it takes to last 5 years. That seems to be a magic number for all my businesses. Your first 5 years is spent making contacts and having your customers spread the good word about you. But your referral business really does not start coming in heavy until years 4+. If you’re not in business, there’s no one there to take the call…
