Successful Bloggers and their Beginnings

Posted by Hyder on February 6th, 2007

This post will take a look back at a few blogs that are some of the most popular online today and their humble beginnings. The order below is not a reflection of any ranking system.

Problogger.net - First blog was LivingRoom.org.au, date first entry added was 27th Novemeber 2002. So Darren Rowse has been blogging for 4 years and 2 months now. He has now built a very successful network and is ranked among the top 100 blogs in the world. First entry on problogger.net.

ShoeMoney.com - Now I really don’t know if this was his first post but here it is - Shoemoney meets a Chihuahua…and Paris Hilton. He also runs eliteretreat.info, that has to be the first .info domain that I’ve seen that actually had something else other than adsense ads.

Mashable.com - Their first post was about something called machinima. Since they have come a far way to be known as the premier destination for anything new related to social network sites among other Web 2.0 stuff.

Techcrunch.com - (I had to) Arrington’s first post was about technorati. That’s enough.

Lifehacker.com - Launched in 2005 it has become a a place for every geek to be. Don’t live to geek, geek to live. First post here.

John Chow dot Com - He has risen steadily over the past year when he got dugg and then unceremoniously banned as well, but his blog continues to rise and most probably will continue doing so. The miscellaneous ramblings of a dot com mogul. His other site is The Tech Zone. First blog post.

Read Write Web.com - A great place to discover new internet happenings, find indepth reviews and more cool stuff. I read it, do you? First post here.

CuteOverLoad.com - All things cute, hey even men like cute stuff. This was the earliest post I could find.

TecheBlog.com - Get your latest gadget news here. Widely read and a lot on popular social network sites. A good reference. Their earliest post.

GigaOm.com - Covering startups, media, voip, mobile etc…he has a lot under his sleeve and keeps dishing it out much to the delight of his readers. First entry here in May 2001, the next one was in December 2001!

Everybody Go To.com - I just had to put myself in :) my first blog post was on the Apple Macbook - the sad part is that I still haven’t been able to afford myself one of these things. Hopefully soon!

There are many many more blogs that are successful as well these are just a few of the ones that I talked about above. You can find many more by visiting technorati and having a look at their Top 100 and searching through the respective bloggers archives to see how they started and what made them successful.

You will have noticed that most of the blogs above are technology oriented well that’s because I’m a tech guy. You could make a top 10 or even top 100 list for each genre out there from politics to environment. But I’ll leave that up to you.
Shoe Diggs it!
