Favicons for websites and blogs

  • Posted under: Design on February 3, 2007

One of the most important aspect of a website is it’s identity from your logo, your layout to an element that is very much overlooked by blog and site owners – the favicon.

It’s quite easy to create a favicon you can just use any of the web resources listed at the end of the post to get started.

Why get yourself a favicon you ask? If somebody likes your blog or site so much they will end up bookmarking it. When you bookmark a site in your browser the image that is associated with your website will show up next to it as well. When people see that image it is an automatic signal to them that the site is yours.

Pretty soon as your bookmarks get bigger you start sorting through them by favicons more, and descriptions less. If your site doesn’t have a favicon it will just be overlooked and not get that many repeat visits from people who have bookmarked it. Below is an example of the favicon for gmail.

The default size for a favicon is 16 X 16 pixels and if you have photoshop, elements or paint shop pro this plugin will help you save your logo or any other image as a favicon.ico image.

When you have created your favicon image simply upload it to your root folder (www.yoursite.com/) and you’re done. Simple.

For those of you who are not too technically inclined I’ve created some free favicons using some very basic designs for you to use. Simply download the zipped file, extract it to a folder on your computer and upload whichever favicon you like to your web root folder.

Download Free Favicons. (please REMEMBER to rename the .ICO you like as favicon.ico otherwise it won’t work)
