I love open source ideas, projects and software. The world needs more freedom from DRM and corporate software that is buggy in the first place and you are forced to upgrade and update all the time. Not saying that open source software is perfect but at least you didn’t have to pay hundreds of dollars for something that thousands of people spent years and millions of dollars developing, know what I mean.
If there ever was a problem with open source software there are thousands of developers behind the project that are always available to help you for free.
My most used open source applications are Firefox, Thunderbird and VLC media player. I’m trying to get into using blender which is a great open source 3D program but it has a steep learning curve so still working on that. There is also Open Office which is a free office suite and not too mention all the open source web design sites like OSWD, Open Source Templates etc… and the list goes on for categories I can’t think of right now.
The hero of all these is probably Linux which very well could have been the first effort at free software, my history may be wrong so correct it if you will. Linus Torvalds was also recently given the honor of being a hero by Time magazine.
So why am I writing all this? Well I have so many ideas flowing through my brain at any given point of time that I want to make them a reality but limitation in the field of code writing among other things means my ideas are usually left floating around, getting a “heck yeah!, that would work” from my wife (she’s so supporting) or sometimes just forgotten till I see them being executed somewhere else by someone who could do it and thought of it as well - for a ridiculous amount of money.
This section of my blog will concentrate on writing ideas that I think will work and what the world needs in terms of software, infrastructure, education and whatever else I conjure up in the middle of the night. The ideas will be completely open to use or implement anywhere “so long as its free”. Now I know I can’t police how my ideas are used as it would be easy for anybody to say well I thought of it before you put it on your site/blog. But at least I can let it out into the world and hopefully even if someone does end up using it they would be so nice as to let me know they are using my idea as inspiration.
So what are my ideas anyway? Well this post has gotten a bit too long so I’ll post the first of many to come in the next post in a day or two. Are they going to be ground breaking ideas? - I don’t know. It’s better to get it written down, inspired, tried, failed or succeeded than to be forgotten.
What goes around comes around.
